International Women's Sports Day: what is it?

The women's sports has long been ignored, but it deserves all our attention. The International Women's Sports Day was created to correct this. It was born in 2014, thanks to the National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF).

Its goal? To celebrate the women in sports, break stereotypes and promote female athlandes. We know how important it is to encourage new generations to get started, to believe in them, and to performer, whether on the field, in a pool, or on a tatami.🥋

You may be sporty, or simply an admirer of the women's exploits? This day is also yours. 🤗

Why is this day marked on the calendar?

Have you noticed that, for years, the women's sports was often put in the background? Thehistory of sport is marked by a inequality between men and women. Few of competitions were open to women, and these were little publicized. The stereotypes of the type "the women are too fragile for sports" were tenacious!

Today again, the challenges persistent. Did you know that only 4% of sports media coverage worldwide concerns the women? This day therefore serves to raise awareness and to remind that we deserve the same recognition than men. What do you think: it is high time for this to change! 💪 (source)

The history of women's sports: a fight for equality

The path of women in sports has not been a long, calm river. Between prejudices et prohibitions, they had to fight to gain the right to participate and to be recognized. Let's go back to the key steps of this wrestling for theequality and those who paved the way. 👑

Before official recognition

A century ago, we, the women, we hardly had our place in sports. They said it wasn't "made for us." Ridiculous, right? Yet, these prejudices have locked up generations for a long time. Our grandmothers, and sometimes even our mothers, did not have the chance to access freely to certain sports disciplines. 😕

Did you know that at the beginning of the 20th century, the women were excluded from competitions like the marathon, deemed "too taxing" for them?

Some disciplines like the boxing, le rugby or even the football were considered "inappropriate" for the female body. And until the 1970s, they didn't even have the right to to run more than 800 meters to Olympic Games. These absurd prohibitions remind us how hard we had to fight to have a place on the fields, tracks, and in the stadiums!

The participation of women in the Olympics

Fortunately, some women broke the silence. In 1900, the women participate for the first time in the Olympic Games. Certainly, they were only 22 athletes, and in some disciplines judged "acceptable", like tennis or sailing, but it was a start. (source)

However, the path to theequality was long and fraught with pitfalls. Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Olympic Games modern, did not hide his opposition to female participation. He declared: "The role of the woman remains what she has always been: she is above all the companion of man, the future mother of the family, and must be raised with this unchanging future in mind.source)

Faced with these prejudices, a femme an exception was raised to defend the women's place in the sport : Alice Milliat.
Pioneer of women's sports, she creates and chairs the Federation of societies feminine sports from France. In opposition to Coubertin's ideas, it organizes the first Women's World Athletics Games in Monte-Carlo in 1921, offering to the women a stage to showcase their talent and determination.

Today, nearly half of the participants in the Olympics are women, a victory that would not have been possible without these battles fought with courage and perseverance. 💪 (source)

The figures who paved the way for women's sports

Before the women do not find their place at the Olympic Games, some pioneers defied prohibitions to make their mark in the history of the sport and pave the way for future generations!

Raymonde de Laroche, first femme to the world at obtain your pilot's license in 1910, challenged conventions by practicing aviation, a field reserved for men. She not only piloted: she invented bold aerial figures that many men even refused to try.

Kathrine Switzer, in 1967, dared to do what seemed unthinkable: officially run the Boston marathon, so prohibited to the women. Her registration under a male pseudonym marked history when officers attempted to arrest her in the middle of course. But Kathrine held on and finished her marathon, becoming an icon of the struggle for equality in sports.

Lisa Lindahl, in 1977, revolutionized the women's sports practice by creating the first sports bra. This accessory, now essential, has allowed millions of women to freely practice all the disciplines, without physical constraint.

And what about iconic figures like Nadia Comăneci, who, at only 14 years old, made history in the Olympic Games from 1976 by obtaining everything first 10 perfect en gymnastics? His incredible performance popularized the gymnastics and has proven that thewomen's sports excellence could captivate the whole world.

Finally, Serena Williams, true legend of the tennis, embodies strength and perseverance. With its 23 Grand Slam titles in simple terms, she is not only one of the largest athletes of all time, but also a source of inspiration for millions of women around the world. 💪

These women, by their courage and determination, changed the rules and redefined what it means to be a athleteTheir legacy continues to inspire and encourage those who dare to dream big and push the limits. 🥊

The role of women in sports today: where do we stand?

Today, we have made progress, but there are still obstacles. In France, 48% of women practice a sports activity regularly. It's encouraging, but still far from sufficient. 😕 (source)

In the international competitions, like the Olympics, the women represent nearly 45% of participants. However, their visibility remains low. Why a match of women's football does it attract fewer spectators than a men's match? Media coverage is still a real issue. But initiatives like the " Women's Sports Plan » created by the French government can in the long term reverse the trend. (source)
