Tips for removing a period blood stain from your Swimwear
The first time I wanted to remove a brown stain from my swimsuit, I immediately put my (cream) Swimwear in the washing machine... The result, the stain is somewhat gone, but still there. So like many of us, my first instinct was to call grandma for advice.
Today, I’m sharing with you all the grandma’s tips to deal with these swimsuit accidents.
Tip #1: Never wash a stained swimsuit without treating the brown stain

If like me, you have your favorite swimsuits, here are the tips my grandmother gave me to prevent this from happening again.
Tip #2: Rinse the brown stain from your Swimwear with cold water
L’eau froide empêche le sang de coaguler et facilite ainsi son élimination. Cold water prevents the blood from clotting and thus makes it easier to remove. Gently rub to remove as much blood as possible, but don’t rub too hard to avoid damaging the fabric.
Tip #3: Use a stain remover before washing your swimsuit
Once the brown stain is rinsed, apply a stain remover specially designed for blood stains. These products are formulated to break down blood proteins and remove them effectively. 🧴
You can find them in all major supermarkets and generally, they keep for quite a while. Apply it directly on the brown stain and let it sit for about ten minutes.
If you prefer a natural and more economical solution, here are all grandma’s tricks:
1. Marseille soap
This classic is formidable for removing brown stains. Moisten the stain, rub it generously with Marseille soap, and let it sit for an hour before rinsing. Repeat if necessary.
2. Baking soda
Baking soda is an excellent cleaning agent. Make a paste with water and apply it on the brown stain. Let it sit for half an hour before rinsing with cold water.
If you had a Swimwear accident, but didn’t treat it immediately, let this solution sit longer. It will remove the brown stain in most cases.
3. Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is very effective on light fabrics. Apply it directly on the blood stain, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water.
Be careful though: test on a small area before use to avoid any discoloration.
4. Aspirin
Dissolve an aspirin tablet in a little water to get a liquid solution. Apply this solution on the stain, let it sit for about twenty minutes, then rinse with cold water. The salicylic acid in aspirin helps to break down the blood in the brown stain.
5. White vinegar
White vinegar is a natural cleaner that works well on blood stains. Soak a cloth with vinegar, dab the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing.
It’s simple, natural, and effective.
6. Salt
For a quick solution, mix a tablespoon of salt with cold water, apply on the stain and let it sit for an hour. Salt helps to absorb the blood and detach the stain from the fabric fibers.
Tip #4: Wash your Swimwear to finish removing the brown stain

Use a mild detergent to avoid damaging the fabric, and optionally add a bit of baking soda in the drum to boost cleaning power. 🧼 Once washing is done, let it air dry, preferably in the shade to prevent the sun from fading the fabric.
The brown stains on Swimwear can be annoying, but they are not inevitable! 😊 With the right techniques and a bit of patience, you can restore your swimsuit to like new. Whether you choose classic stain removers or grandma’s tricks, the important thing is to act quickly and always use cold water first, never put it directly in the machine. Now, you no longer have to fear Swimwear accidents.
